Gas and traditional electric cooktops fail in fairly familiar ways — a clogged burner port, a worn igniter, a coil element or its connector — but induction cooktops work on a different principle entirely, using a magnetic field and a temperature sensor under the glass to regulate each zone, which means pan detection and sensor accuracy matter as much as the heating coil itself.

Diagnosis starts by identifying which type of cooktop is involved and which specific zone or burner is affected, since a problem isolated to one zone almost always points at that zone’s own coil, igniter or connector rather than the shared control board. On induction models, we test pan detection with a known-good pan before concluding a coil has failed, since the two can look identical from the user’s side of the glass.

Gas cooktop work near the burner valves and igniters is carried out with the gas supply confirmed off, and if gas is smelled at any point the visit stops there — that calls for the gas utility or emergency services, not further troubleshooting. Electric and induction work is done with the cooktop unplugged or isolated at the breaker, and a failed part is confirmed with a test before it is added to your estimate.

Induction cooktops rely on the pan’s base making solid magnetic contact with the surface, so even a correctly rated pan can fail to register if it is warped, too small for the zone, or not centered. If a known-good pan still is not detected in more than one zone, the induction coil or its sensor circuit needs testing rather than the pan being the problem.

Yes, until it is checked. A yellow or orange flame usually means incomplete combustion, often from a dirty burner port or an air-shutter adjustment issue, and it can produce excess carbon monoxide. Turn that burner off, use another one if you need to cook, and have it looked at rather than continuing to use it as-is.

Not always — a wet or greasy surface, or a phone or metal object resting near the panel on some induction models, can interfere with touch sensing. If the panel is clean and dry and still behaves unpredictably, the touch control board itself is the more likely cause.
