What E38 Means
E38 is logged when the air trap is clogged. The air trap is the chamber at the bottom of the tub that feeds air pressure to the level sensor; if detergent sludge or lint blocks it, the sensor stops tracking the real water level.
Common Causes of E38
- Detergent residue or sludge in the air trap
- Lint or debris in the air trap outlet
- Pressure tube pinched where it leaves the air trap
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Run a Clean Washer or tub-clean cycle with an empty drum, using the cleaner or bleach dose the use and care guide lists, and switch to a high-efficiency detergent measured to the line. Heavy dosing is the usual source of the sludge that ends up in the air trap.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The air trap is reached from under or behind the tub; removing its hose with water in the drum lets that water out onto the floor.
- If cleaning the trap does not help, the chart moves on to the main board, which is not an owner repair.
